My First Time Abroad

It was really an exciting experience; however, I had mixed feelings while leaving. I was happy, because it was an opening of a new chapter in my life, and I could start to do the things that I had always wanted to do and will experience a new environment, meeting new people at work and lots of travel to do in different places.

On the other hand, I was also sad, because I had to leave my family and friends that are likely the most important people in my life, my beloved hometown and local food that I love and have grown so accustomed to. I'm gonna miss everything and thinking what would be my life when I came back after I give up my work, I have to leave them behind and start out all by myself in a foreign country.

I remember when I boarded the plane, I felt a really strange feeling on the flight; it was a sort of feeling not knowing what to expect when I landed. All I know in my mind that I have to take whatever jobs come along which will not be within my chosen career field, or even close to my major in order to be able to afford to stay in UK.

I also recall during my trip to my new accommodation, I was so fascinated with the new surroundings that I was in but my rent is quite expensive. But well, I have been living in the UK for about 6 months now, and I'm used to the country now.

It might sound glamorous getting to travel abroad for work, but it's really not.

Basically, some of the overseas Pinoys lend money from families and sometimes sold properties for expenses going or working abroad. Like me, I had a debt to pay while staying here and need to pay them whilst working every month. I've took a business course in a university in our country but then I work as a Health Care Assistant in a Nursing Home here. I believe it’s not only me; there are lots of overseas Pinoys that are working which is not in their field. Their field of expertise might be useful in some cases where our country need it most like our Nurses, Engineers and many more.

So, why I go abroad?

I have spent many years working in a city and even in my hometown in a variety of jobs but still I don't think I could find a permanent job so I decided to go abroad, it was a decision that was almost certainly taking me into new territory in the way I lived my life.

I go abroad with full of hope that someday I could grab an opportunity to make a change in a lifestyle with a goal of saving money for good. I want to pursue my dream when I come back home to become a successful businessman someday that could generate even a little employment in my community while serving my family as well within our place.

It is hardly surprising more people are choosing to work abroad - there are many reasons to go down when making the choice to do this.

It is redundancy that causes this move for many people - no jobs out there for their skills within their community.

I hope leaders in our government will hear our different stories here in PEBA and is sincere to their promise for a change and development of our country. That they will give importance to all the graduates to find a right job and not encourage them to go abroad. When this happen (if it happens) overseas Pinoys will go back home with joy and happiness, finally we can live together with our families and can support them locally.

There's a lot of filipinos who migrated in different places in the world especially in the United States for greener pasture as we all say. Yes, most of them are in the same boat as you are Brother Roy - working but not in their chosen field of profession. Statistically, there are approximately < or = 2% of the immigrant Filipinos in the foreign land that are working not within their chosen profesion. Most of them are doctors and nurses. There are some that are not in the medical field that are lucky enough to land a job that are in line with the profession they studied for and am proud to say I'm one of them. I studied as an Agricultural Business Economist at Central Mindanao university and have been working in a food manufacturing company with a managerial capacity position for almost three (3) decades now. Not that I'm bragging but the point that I'm trying to make is that whether or not you belong to the 2% doesn't really matter. We Filipinos migrated in the foreign land for one goal only and that is to find a better job opportunity so as to earn a living and support our family back home. So even if you're only a care gaver who cares it's a job! For as long as you're working and you're not standing on the street carrying a sign, begging for help you're doing just fine. So if you belong to the 98% don't feel bad. You should consider yourself blessed for accomplishing what you've been dreaming of doing for a long time. just enjoy and make the best of it.

All OFWs almost have the same reasons in going out of the country... To find a greener pasture not for themselves but for their love ones. Difficult as it may be but we have to bear the hardships of living in a foreign land. And like you I dream of finally being able to save enough money so I could stay home for good and give back to the community.. Good luck to us all OFWs.

Not all pastures are green. My advice is to take all opportunities that you think is best for you. Do not go home until you meet your goals.

Good luck to you adventure and goals in life. Pray that everything will go smoothly and planned.

@Alohagems, I am leaning to other avenues so I could finally go home but as of now I must go on working in a foreign land until I am sure that I can provide well for my family...Until then I must bear the biting fangs of Homesickness.

You indeed have the point Roy, it's really surprising (or perhaps no more surprising) that many pinoys are choosing to work abroad. Even I myself when I was still in college, I used to say that I won't work abroad whenever I was ask about my plan after finishing my bachelor's degree but when I had graduated, I had no choice but to grab the opportunity of becoming an OFW since to have an outstanding job in Phil. is quite impossible for a fresh college graduate unless you have an excellent contacts (network).

Ganoon yata talaga. Maraming tao na may kursong tinapos pero hindi yon ang nagiging trabaho. Ayos lang kung ok naman ang kita lalo na kung walang other choice.

Anyway, good luck sa entry mo sa PEBA.

I am agree of what you have stated. Philippines got the best of people around the world.
